The restoration and expansion of the historic 1905 Charles E. Moody School transformed a long-vacant building on the Good Will-Hinckley campus into a vibrant academic facility for the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences, Maine’s first charter school. The project preserved the building’s historic character while modernizing the interior to support contemporary educational needs.
The 16,150-SF building was fully renovated and expanded by 7,200 SF, creating state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, and support spaces. Exterior restoration included masonry repair, replication of original terra cotta and trim, and refurbishment of historic doors and windows.
As Maine’s first net-positive energy academic building, the facility incorporates high-performance systems and sustainable features, including photovoltaic panels, a super-insulated envelope, LED lighting, and daylighting strategies. This project successfully blends historic preservation with forward-thinking design, creating a unique learning environment rooted in both heritage and innovation.
